Hel (Hela)

The town of Hel (German: Hela) lends its name to, and is the main town on, the peninsula of the same name. In the northwest of the Bay of Gdańsk, this narrow spit extends southeastward. Today, Hel is a major holiday destination on Poland’s Baltic coast, connected to the Polish rail network by a railway line.

The town itself, with just under 4,000 residents, makes a picturesque impression. Its shopping and promenade street, lined with shops, boutiques, jewellers, cafés and restaurants, is reminiscent of major seaside resorts. The large public harbour is home to fishing vessels as well as passenger ships, which operate regular ferry services to Sopot and Gdańsk .

The peninsula and its main town of the same name are easily accessible via a well-maintained road, a railway line with hourly services to Gdynia, a dedicated cycle path and a hiking trail. This makes the peninsula and its main town among the most popular and beautiful destinations for a Baltic holiday on the Polish coast.
