Vejle

Vejle dates back to an ancient settlement that already played a role under the Viking king Harald Bluetooth. Nearby, in Jelling, you can also find the runestone of the Viking king Harald Bluetooth. Like Randers, Kolding, Horsens and Aalborg , Vejle developed into a maritime trading town on the Baltic coast of the Jutland peninsula. After Vejle lost importance for a time, the town only regained prominence after the southern Jutland ports of Flensburg, Aabenraa and Haderslev were ceded to Germany in 1864.

Today, Vejle presents itself to visitors as a blend of tranquillity and big-city atmosphere, with a lively bustle in the old town. Vejle is the northern tip of the so-called Triangle Region, bordered by the coastal towns of Vejle, Kolding and Fredericia . Reopened in 2006, Vejle Art Museum houses one of the finest collections of Danish and European prints. Legelandet has 3,000 square metres of indoor play space for children of all ages, with slides, bouncy castles and interactive play equipment. There is an exceptionally wide choice of accommodation in and around Vejle, including almost ten campsites and a large number of holiday homes and apartments, making it an ideal base for a varied holiday on Denmark’s Baltic coast.

Vejle lies at the head of Vejle Fjord, which flows into the Baltic Sea. To the east, shallow, child-friendly beaches stretch along the fjord. The steep coastline along the northern shore of the fjord is particularly striking. Vejle Ådal has the feel of a low mountain landscape. Vejle is also home to a golf museum—the only one in Denmark and one of just two in Europe.
