Vorpommern and the Szczecin Lagoon
The Vorpommern mainland stretches from the town of Damgarten in the northwest to the outskirts of Szczecin, shortly before the mouth of the Oder into the Szczecin Lagoon. Vorpommern also includes the holiday regions of Fischland-Darß-Zingst Peninsula, Rügen Island and Usedom Island, which are presented separately because of their outstanding importance as tourist destinations. The historical region of Pomerania also includes the areas in what are now Poland’s West Pomeranian Voivodeship (Wojewόdztwo Zachodniopomorskie) and parts of the Pomeranian Voivodeship (Wojewόdztwo Pomorskie).
Vorpommern refers to the part of Pomerania that remained within Germany after the borders were drawn in 1945.
The Vorpommern mainland is dominated by the Hanseatic towns of Greifswald and Stralsund. With its many castles and manor houses, some of which have only been partially reconstructed, Vorpommern makes an interesting day-trip destination for beach holidaymakers on Rügen and Usedom.
