Ducal Town of Wolgast
The town of Wolgast lies on both sides of the Peenestrom and, with its imposing bascule bridge, is considered the gateway to Usedom Island.
With its newly redesigned waterfront and quayside facilities and a shopping arcade, the Schlossinsel recalls Wolgast’s heyday as the residence of the Pomeranian dukes and as a seafaring town of national importance. The marina, a maritime gem, is a popular destination for sailors and inland cruise ships. The bascule bridge across the Peenestrom is a particular attraction in Wolgast and a landmark visible from far away. Close to the harbor is the birthplace of Philipp Otto Runge, founder of Romantic art in Germany, now a museum.
A lovingly maintained local history museum is housed beside the Historic Town Hall in one of the town’s oldest buildings, the “Kaffeemühle” (Coffee Mill). Particularly noteworthy are St. Petri Church, with its ducal crypt, and Gertruden Chapel on Chaussestraße. From the church tower, there are sweeping views across Usedom Island and the mainland of Western Pomerania. The local wildlife park at Tannenkamp is a family-friendly attraction.
