Travelling Around the Baltic Sea
Journey, journey!
Under this title, author Dr. Peer Schmidt-Walther describes his journey through life after 75 years. It has taken him across (almost) every sea in the world, from Antarctica to the North Pole. His journeys through various professions are also well worth reading about, as his email account shows: teacher, PhD geographer, shipping and travel journalist (DJV, CTOUR) – press officer (reserve lieutenant commander) – book and film author – university of applied sciences lecturer in maritime tourism.
He made quite a few of these journeys around the Baltic Sea, with detours along rivers and lakes. Decades ago, not far from the Baltic, in the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, he found not only the love of his life, but also a new home.
It lies just a few hundred metres from the berth of the historic ship Gorch Fock, which was moored in Stralsund on his initiative, too.
His experiences around the Baltic Sea are many and varied: meeting Lech Walesa in Gdańsk, travelling along the Western Pomeranian coast several times, heading up the Peene, taking a boat trip through the region where he was born, Wartheland, and sailing from Rostock to Stralsund.
At nearly 600 pages, the book is not only a fascinating read but also a portrait of an entire era, written by a man who never sits still.
The book can be ordered directly from the author for €19.95:
