Summer Theatre on Usedom

In the 1990s, the nearby Vorpommersche Landesbühne founded three venues on the popular holiday island of Anklam, the southern gateway to the island of Usedom.
The “Chapeau Rouge,” the red theatre tent on the seafront promenade in Heringsdorf, began staging performances in 1993. Its repertoire includes well-known works by German and international authors, fairy tales for children, cabaret, and appearances by renowned artists.
The other two venues followed in 1997 in the Baltic Sea resort of Zinnowitz, Usedom’s unofficial cultural capital. An old warehouse was converted into the “Die Blechbüchse” theatre. Its repertoire is similar to Heringsdorf’s, but also includes talks and panel discussions.
The nearby open-air theatre was renovated and has since been the venue for the Vineta Festival. Every year, performers enchant the many spectators with colourful shows about the history of the legendary city, which is said to have sunk into the sea because of its inhabitants’ greed.
In 2002, the open-air production “Die Peene brennt” premiered in Anklam, while the Usedom Harbour Festival opened in the town of the same name in 2008. It later moved to Wolgast because of the harbour renovations.
