Zinnowitz
With more than 150 years of bathing tradition, the Baltic Sea resort of Zinnowitz is one of Germany’s oldest and today most prominent Baltic Sea resorts. Along its beach promenade, redesigned in 1993, Zinnowitz features many historic buildings in the resort architecture style. After 1945, Zinnowitz became the main holiday destination for SDAG Wismut, a prosperous uranium-mining company. It financed not only the upkeep of infrastructure but also the construction of holiday homes, many of which have since become hotels. A diving gondola was inaugurated at the end of the pier in the summer of 2006. This was the work of a local engineer, who developed a world first that allows visitors to experience the underwater world at close quarters.
With its two theatre venues, a theatre academy for training students, the Usedom Art House and numerous events, the Baltic Sea resort of Zinnowitz is considered Usedom’s cultural capital. The summer Vineta Festival, staged on the open-air theatre, recalls the legend of the sunken city said to have once stood off the coast of Usedom.
The small harbour on the Achterwasser lagoon has been developed into a stopover for waterway travellers, with a landing stage for boats.
