Rehabilitation Clinics on Usedom

The Healing Climate of Usedom

The climatic benefits of the Baltic Sea island of Usedom are appealing not only for holidays; rehabilitation patients can also benefit directly. They enjoy a unique microclimate. The clean, virtually pollutant-free air of the coastal forest is complemented by a phenomenon known as surf aerosol. In onshore winds, seawater is whipped up by the wind, forming this health-promoting aerosol—a mixture of water and air that has to be artificially created elsewhere, for example in salt works.

Active Health Maintenance and Rehabilitation

Another advantage of the location is the many opportunities for physical activity, which are adapted in particular to the needs and abilities of rehabilitation patients. These include Nordic walking on the beach or in the forest, cycling along mostly flat cycle paths, and swimming in on-site pools. The well-developed promenades in the seaside resorts that are home to rehabilitation clinics also invite visitors to enjoy relaxing walks. They are part of a highly developed tourist infrastructure that ensures patients an enjoyable stay, offering more than just opportunities to maintain their health. In many cases, patients return to the island of Usedom for a private holiday.

Usedom: An Island of Experiences

Since the early 1990s, numerous rehabilitation clinics have opened in seaside resorts along Usedom’s Baltic coast. They are located in the resorts of Trassenheide, Kölpinsee (2), Ückeritz, Heringsdorf (3) and Ahlbeck. They build on the long tradition of seaside health resorts on the Usedom coast. Since 2007, these clinics have been united in the Usedom Rehabilitation Network, jointly promoting their services. The annual Health Day in August provides an ideal opportunity to do so.
