Germany’s oldest beach-chair factory in Heringsdorf
After learning the craft of making beach chairs in Rostock , Carl Martin Harder decided to open his own factory—in his hometown of Wolgast , just outside Usedom, in 1925. A few years later, he moved the business to Heringsdorf. After 1945, he continued running it for a few more years, until it was expropriated and the company continued production under the name VEB Korb- und Flechtwaren. The Heringsdorf site is therefore Germany’s oldest beach-chair factory still in existence.

Mathias Fromholz began his career at Germany’s oldest beach-chair factory in Heringsdorf. In 1992, as managing partner, he took it into the market economy under the name Korb GmbH Seebad Heringsdorf & Co. KG and played a key role in shaping its development. During this time, the factory produced not only the G-8 chair but also, for example, the first dog beach chair, hospitality chairs with beer taps, grills, and even models for baked goods. Working closely with industry, the company devoted considerable effort to developing and manufacturing UV-resistant, easy-care, recyclable synthetic wicker in a rattan look. Today, Strandkorbfabrik Heringsdorf GmbH offers beach chairs made in-house, alongside beach chairs and furniture from renowned manufacturers.

Customers are involved throughout the process. Everyone can have their own uniquely designed chair shipped home by freight carrier as a memento of their holiday. The motto is: “An island at home! Bring your holiday home!”
To help prospective customers see for themselves the quality of the beach chairs, factory tours are now available by prior arrangement. Owners of holiday apartments, as well as hotels and restaurants, can also take advantage of additional services such as beach-chair and patio-furniture maintenance and winter storage.

so they can enjoy the original for many years. Beach chairs are still made here using traditional handcrafting methods.
