Hotels in Holstein
The region of Holstein is one of the most time-honored holiday destinations on the German Baltic coast and in Germany as a whole. It has therefore become home to numerous holiday hotels, which today offer a wide variety of options. The range extends from large-scale hotels, particularly in the towns and along Lübeck Bay, to modest, family-run establishments and, last but not least, small guesthouses.
Holstein’s varied landscape alone accounts for the region’s popularity. Building on this, a highly developed tourist infrastructure has been established, which today shapes the region’s appeal as a holiday destination for hotel and guesthouse stays.
Like Schleswig to its north, Holstein is a “land between two seas”, between the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. The Baltic coast of Holstein begins at the mouth of the Kiel Canal into Kiel Fjord and ends just east of Lübeck and the entrance to the Trave.
The relatively straight coastline is made up mainly of the Wagrien peninsula and the island of Fehmarn. The region’s most important seaside resorts, with their attractive hotels, are strung along the coast, especially around Lübeck Bay.
One area near the Baltic coast has been a popular part of Baltic holidays for many years: Holstein Switzerland. Situated halfway between Kiel and Lübeck, this hilly region was shaped by the last ice age and is dotted with numerous lakes. Much of the area forms part of Holstein Switzerland Nature Park.
The Holstein coast and its hinterland are among the most accessible and popular excursion destinations in the entire Baltic region. With its hotels and guesthouses, this is a holiday region with a rich past and a bright future.
