Østerlars: Hotels and Accommodation

Østerlars is part of the travel region of the island of Bornholm and is known within this region for its round church.

Culture

The round church of Østerlars was built around 1150 and is the largest of Bornholm’s four round churches. It has three floors and heavily reinforced exterior walls; historically, it also served as a refuge for the inhabitants of the surrounding farms. Inside, there are medieval frescoes on the central pillar depicting the life and birth of Jesus Christ as well as the Last Judgment.

Østerlars also has an artists’ colony. Cultural workers, writers, craftspeople and painters have settled there in the village; studios and workshops are presented as visitor attractions for culture enthusiasts.

Location

Østerlars is an inland village on Bornholm and is located where the valleys of Kobbeå and Stavehøl meet, a few kilometres southwest of Gudhjem. The village is also approximately six kilometres south of Gudhjem and five kilometres northwest of Østermarie.

The surrounding area of Østerlars includes Sorte Gryde, Hullehavn, Bornholm, Bodilskirke and Brændesgårdshaven. The wider regional surroundings of Østerlars include Antoinette, Hammershus and Solomons Kapel. One of Denmark’s highest waterfalls is also located near Østerlars.
