Nature

Šilutė is situated on the banks of the Šyša. In the surrounding geographical area, the Nemunas flows into the Curonian Lagoon. Ragininkų Sala, Rusnės Sala, Zingelinės Sala and Triušių Sala are located near Šilutė. Karvaičiai lies in the wider regional surroundings of Šilutė.

History

Historically, Šilutė is associated with the names Heidekrūga and Heydekrug. The town is described as part of Lithuania Minor, the former East Prussia, and was first mentioned in written sources in the 13th century. Šilutė developed as a marketplace.
