Warlitz brings together several distinct cultural and historical themes: the late Baroque village church, the manor house with its park, and Goldenitz Estate House. If you are choosing a destination with an interest in architectural history, it is worth looking at these differences. At the church, the focus is on its construction period, organ and churchyard; at the estate houses, architectural design and parkland also come into the picture. This makes it possible to explore the area through sacred architecture, historic estate-house culture or designed landscapes.
Warlitz Village Church was built from 1765 to 1768. As a late Baroque building, it gives a visit to the village a point of reference in time. It stands in an octagonal churchyard surrounded by old lime trees; the church also has an organ by organ builder Johann Georg Stein. The construction period, the churchyard’s layout and the organ builder’s name offer different ways to explore it: you can focus on the period in which it was built, the grounds around the church or the work of an organ builder. The church is also part of a cycle route featuring sacred buildings. This adds a cycling perspective with an explicitly church-related theme to the opportunity to explore the building itself.
Another historic highlight is Warlitz Manor House, built in 1620 by Danish Colonel von Pentz. It is set in a park of around three hectares with a small lake and a moat. These landscape features, as well as the date of construction, are part of the estate’s character. Compared with the late Baroque village church, the focus shifts to a much earlier historic building and its parkland. The two construction periods mark different historical starting points: 1620 for the manor house and 1765 to 1768 for the church.
Goldenitz Estate House offers another distinctive architectural perspective. Hellmuth von Könemann had the two-storey rendered building constructed around 1860; the architect, Heinrich Gustav Thormann, designed it in the Tudor style. The house stands on a raised basement storey and has eight bays. In a description of a façade, a bay refers to a vertical division along which openings are arranged. The reference to eight bays makes the façade’s layout easy to picture; together with the raised basement storey and two upper storeys, it describes the building’s design. The well-kept park around the estate house and the coach house includes a large pond on the south side and numerous old trees. Here, both the architecture and a parkland setting with specific design features are in focus.
As a further, quite different highlight, visitors can learn about bee products at Schloss Warlitz, a professional apiary; visits are possible only after a brief phone call and by prior arrangement.
Cultural History in the Wider Destination of Ludwigslust-Parchim
Within the wider destination of Ludwigslust-Parchim, Ludwigslust Palace offers another cultural and historical highlight. It was the former residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg and, together with its park and town, forms an ensemble known as the “Little Versailles of the North.” The palace is also the centrepiece of an almost completely preserved late Baroque town plan, with a former court church and an English-style landscape park. The palace presents art and courtly domestic culture from the 18th and early 19th centuries. The highlights differ: Warlitz focuses on the village church, manor house and Goldenitz Estate House, with their historic and landscape features; Ludwigslust Palace adds the perspectives of residential history, courtly domestic culture and the late Baroque town plan.
