Kratzeburg is located in the heart of the Mecklenburg Lake District, in the Havel headwaters and directly on Lake Käbelicksee. It is the largest lake in a small local network of lakes connected by the Havel. Hiking trails of different lengths
A marked 14-km loop runs around Lake Käbelicksee and Lake Granziner See. It starts on Kratzeburger Dorfstraße; from there, the route passes through a railway underpass and into the forest. Those planning a longer hike can choose the Havelquell hiking trail: this marked 26-km route starts in Kratzeburg and follows paved and natural-surface paths.
A shorter alternative is the 3.5-km Spurenweg trail between Kratzeburg and Dambeck in Müritz National Park. The nature trail is accessible. Details about the length and surface help you plan your outing according to the distance available: the three trails differ in length and, in the case of the Havelquell hiking trail, also in their described path surfaces.
On Lake Käbelicksee and the Havel
There is a bathing area with a large sunbathing lawn on the shore of Lake Käbelicksee in Kratzeburg. Canoes can travel from the lake onto the Havel. Regional and long-distance cycling routes, as well as paddling trips, also lead from Kratzeburg through the Mecklenburg Lake District. Alongside the marked hiking trails, cycling and water routes are therefore also options to consider when planning your trip.
Discover nature and find your bearings
The “Kratzeburger Flatterhus” National Park Information Centre has an exhibition about bats. It also provides information about hikes, osprey viewing sites, crane roosting areas and bathing lakes. This combines an insight into local wildlife with information on a range of nature-related topics in the region. Those with a particular interest in bats can include the exhibition in their plans; visitors who would rather be outdoors can find information there about hikes and viewing sites.
Fishing and farm produce
The Havelquellseen Berkholz fishery is part of the local food culture. It sells fresh fish, smoked fish, homemade fish specialities and fish platters. The business has been family-run for generations and has been based in Kratzeburg for more than 250 years. Professional fisherman Jens Berkholz has run it for over 25 years. The business’s history and its fish selection make the fishery a distinctive part of the local character.
Lütte Meierie also combines local production and enjoyment: fresh pasture milk from its own cows is made into cheese, quark and soft-serve ice cream on the farm. These products, along with regional and organic goods, are sold and served at the farm shop and café in Kratzeburg. The café serves homemade cake and coffee. Guests can watch the farm animals, and children are welcome to use the playground.
A look at the village
Another local landmark is the half-timbered church in Kratzeburg. It was consecrated in 1786 and has remained largely intact on the outside. Together with the exhibition at the Flatterhus, the trails, and the fishing and farm produce offerings, it makes for a stay that is not focused on just one activity.
