Groß Kordshagen lies on the southern shore of the Grabow, which is part of the Barther Bodden. The village is located west of Stralsund: Barth is about eight kilometers to the west, and Stralsund about 18 kilometers to the east.

The surrounding area of Groß Kordshagen includes Stralsund Zoo, Barther Oie, Bülten, and Gänsebrink. In the wider region, cycling and hiking trails include sections of the Baltic Sea Cycle Route as well as a loop from Groß Kordshagen to the bathing area on the Barther Bodden. The wider region also includes access to the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park and opportunities for observing nature.

The Marienkirche church in Flemendorf is located nearby. The surrounding area also includes Kenz-Küstrow, Marienkirche, Mönchstein, and Barth, St. Marien Church. Historically, Groß Kordshagen was connected with the Principality of Rügen before 1326, until the village became part of the Duchy of Pomerania in 1326.
