Velgast is a municipality west of Stralsund in the Vorpommern-Rügen district of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The municipality lies approximately 25 kilometers west of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund. Its landscape is situated on a geest ridge; the Barthe flows through the southern part of the municipal area.

History

Velgast was first mentioned in a document in 1242 and is considered one of the oldest places in Western Pomerania. The place name derives from the Old Slavic words “velki gast” and means approximately “large grove.”
