Buggenhagen Castle and the Till Richter Museum
Buggenhagen Castle was built around 1840 as a Neoclassical manor house, modelled on the buildings at Pariser Platz in Berlin. It was once the ancestral seat of the von Buggenhagen family. After a long period of different uses, the castle is now home to the Till Richter Museum of Contemporary Art. The building’s history and its current use as a museum give the site several distinct cultural facets.
The museum’s collection comprises several hundred works in a wide range of media. They are by more than 100 artists from Europe, America and Asia. The variety of media and the artists’ international backgrounds offer a practical guide for art lovers: the museum visit is not limited to a single technique or region of origin. Together with the Neoclassical manor house, the collection makes for a cultural experience that encompasses both the art and the building’s history.
Artistic work and exhibitions
The museum’s programme includes the annual “Rising Stars Residency.” For this, the museum invites one to three artists to stay for three months, from mid-May to mid-August. They work individually or together, and the results are exhibited in the museum’s main rooms from August to January. Visitors interested in contemporary art can take these periods into account when planning their trip. The residency includes both the working phase and the subsequent presentation of the works created.
Nature trail and routes
The Klotzow nature trail offers a different perspective on Buggenhagen. It has been open to local residents and tourists since September 2024 and is accessible to all age groups. Seven information boards cover the water source, peatland rewetting, and native trees and birds. The trail is therefore suited to visitors who want to learn about local water and peatland issues, as well as the region’s plants and birdlife, as part of a nature outing.
Hiking and cycling routes also lead to Buggenhagen, though these are separate routes. The “Lassaner Winkel” hiking route runs from Lassan via Buggenhagen to the Großer Moor. On this hike, you reach Buggenhagen Castle; a footpath passes to the right of the castle through the castle park and on to nearby Jamitzow. The route thus combines the way to the Großer Moor with a section by the castle and through the park. In the cycling brochure, Route 4, “Lassaner Winkel,” leads, among other places, to Buggenhagen Manor House.

Buggenhagen can be reached via federal highway 111, state road 26 and then district road 30. From Buggenhagen, the island of Usedom and the district town of Anklam can be reached via Pinnow.
