The area around Sternberg is considered a lake district formed by a hilly terminal moraine at Lake Großer Sternberger See; the Mildenitz River flows through this area. The wider Sternberg area includes Großer Sternberger See, Trenntsee, Groß Radener See, Luckower See, Wustrowsee, and Oberer See.

The immediate surroundings of Sternberg include Kugelberg, Heidberg, Himmelsberg, and Voßbarg.

Culture and History

The Groß Raden Open-Air Museum is located in the immediate surroundings of Sternberg. The wider region is home to Bützow Castle, Güstrow Palace, and the Schwerin-Zippendorf television tower.

Sternberg is home to the megalithic tombs of Klein Görnow and Dabel 2, the Sternberg rampart, which has been identified as an Old Slavic archaeological site, and a Middle Slavic dwelling pit.

The settlement of Sternberg was laid out around 1230–1250 with a grid-like street network and a slightly elliptical layout; it was granted town rights in 1248.
