Culture and History
The village church of St. Nicholas is a Gothic church. Parts of the building date from the 15th century, and the altar was added in 1746. Thatched-roof houses contribute to the local architectural character; these include the old vicarage on Bahnhofstraße.
Altefähr is also associated with a long history as a ferry port. The town is said to have served as a ferry port since around 1200 and is mentioned indirectly in a document from 1240.
