Church and Technology Model Museum

The church in Samtens dates from the 15th century and, in its original form, is an example of Brick Gothic architecture. Its features include a baptismal angel from around 1700, a finely crafted triumphal cross at the altar and epitaphs. Unusual Late Gothic wall paintings have also been preserved above a depiction of Saint Christopher. The dates highlight two distinct periods: the 15th-century church building and the baptismal angel from around 1700. The Technology Model Museum in Samtens is devoted to technology and vehicles and currently has 500 m² of exhibition space. It displays models of the Rügen narrow-gauge railways and other railway lines, as well as dioramas. In contrast to the church, the museum explores a different subject area: its focus is on vehicles, railway lines and dioramas rather than architectural style and religious furnishings.

Sports Facilities at SOIBELMANNS Hotel Rügen

SOIBELMANNS Hotel Rügen in Samtens adds sports facilities to the cultural attractions. The facilities are available not only to hotel guests but also to day visitors and club members. Availability and booking conditions may change, so check them in advance. The 260 m² climbing wall has routes of varying difficulty, up to Grade IX; beginners can also learn to climb under supervision. The tennis hall has two courts. Sports visitors can use the 25 m swimming pool, with four lanes, and the sauna for a fee; pool use is free for hotel guests.

Transport and Vorpommern-Rügen

At the municipal level, the B96 N and the Stralsund–Sassnitz railway line pass directly through the municipality of Samtens. Road and rail therefore provide two different points of reference for transport planning at the municipal level.

Vorpommern-Rügen provides a separate regional context. The district of Vorpommern-Rügen includes the island of Rügen and the nearby islands of Hiddensee and Ummanz; the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula chain is also part of the district. The number of museums in the district is estimated at around 60. Regional cultural and natural attractions include the old town of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar,” and the beech forests in Jasmund National Park on Rügen, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe.” The Störtebeker Festival is one of the cultural events for which Vorpommern-Rügen is known. The regional context thus brings together historical urban heritage and the natural heritage of Rügen as distinct themes.
