Lietzow: Beach, Bodden and Nature

Between the Bodden and protected landscapes

The location between the two Bodden shapes the area around Lietzow. To the north and south, the town is bordered by extensive European conservation areas in the Natura 2000 network. The Wostevitzer Teiche ponds are also nearby: protected, natural shallow lakes that provide a habitat for amphibians, reptiles and numerous specially protected bird species. If you enjoy combining your stay with wildlife watching, they offer another excursion option besides the beach.

From Lietzow, you can reach the Schmale Heide nature reserve and its Feuersteinfelder flint fields on foot via the Steilhangweg trail, which runs parallel to the railway, or by bike through the forest. Surrounded by woodland, the flint fields stand out for their white stones and open to semi-open vegetation. The contrast between the wooded surroundings and open areas makes this natural landscape a destination in its own right, apart from the Bodden shores.

Hiking and cycling routes from Lietzow

The 24-kilometre Bodden-Panoramaweg quality hiking trail follows a scenic route along the Großer Jasmunder Bodden from Neuenkirchen through Lietzow to Mukran. In Lietzow, an unspoilt beach along the trail invites you to take a swimming break. The total length of the trail is a useful guide for planning your day; it does not indicate a specific walking time.

The network of cycling and hiking trails also leads from Lietzow to various destinations: the Feuersteinfelder flint fields, Mukran and Binz, as well as through the Semperwald forest to Martinshafen and Glowe. The cycling routes listed by the municipality also include a bike ride from Lietzow to Pulitz Island and a tour to Binz. A hike along the Kleiner and Großer Jasmunder Bodden to Ralswiek and back is also listed. This gives you a choice between a bike ride to a named destination, a route through the forest and a hike along the Bodden, without needing to combine these tours into a single route.

Activities on and by the water

Lietzow is recommended as a starting point for kayaking on the Großer Jasmunder Bodden. The small, slightly stony beach is suitable for launching kayaks. There is also a boat slipway at the Bücherbahnhof, where boats can be launched into the Kleiner Jasmunder Bodden. These are two distinct ways to access the water: the beach for kayaks and the slipway at the Bücherbahnhof for boats.

The Kleiner and Großer Jasmunder Bodden are also fishing areas. The fish species found there include pike, zander, perch and flounder. If you are interested in fishing, you can explore these waters as well as the hiking and cycling routes and natural areas nearby.

Local history and culture

The name Lietzow is linked to a prehistoric term: the “Lietzow culture” refers to the final phase of the Mesolithic period, characterised by nomadic hunter-gatherers, and was named after the town. In the centre of Lietzow stands the Schlösschen Klein Lichtenstein, a miniature copy of Lichtenstein Castle near Reutlingen in the Swabian Jura. It was built around 1893 by the master builder of the railway line across the Lietzow Dam.

Lietzow offers talks, archaeological and natural history guided tours, and workshops for residents and tourists. These activities provide additional ways to get to know the town and its surroundings beyond the landscape and outdoor pursuits.
