Heathland and views

The Patziger Heide defines the location of the village. For planning your trip, the highest point is particularly relevant: In good weather, the view from there may extend to four named destinations – from the Hanseatic city of Stralsund to Granitz Hunting Lodge, Cape Arkona and the island of Hiddensee. The view thus connects different places and landscapes, although it is not equally accessible in all weather conditions. If a stay with opportunities to enjoy the landscape is important to you, this weather-dependent view is a specific reason to consider Patzig.

Choose a section along the Bodden

Patzig is a suitable starting point for a section of the Bodden Panorama Trail. You can choose a stretch along either the Great or the Little Bodden. The full trail runs from Neuenkirchen to Mukran along the Great and Little Bodden and is about 23 km long. This figure refers to the trail as a whole; in Patzig, the option described is to walk a section. You can therefore plan your trip according to whether you would like to hike along the Great or the Little Bodden, rather than using the entire route as the measure of a stay.

In 2015, the German Hiking Association awarded the Bodden Panorama Trail the title “Quality Trail: Wanderbares Deutschland” (Hiking in Germany). Together with its described route along both Boddens, this gives the hiking experience a clear connection to the landscape. When planning a visit to Patzig, the key point is that the village is suitable as a starting point for a section, with both Boddens named as possible directions.

St. Margaret’s Village Church and its historic features

St. Margaret’s Village Church also gives Patzig a cultural identity. The 750-year-old village of Patzig is home to a granite baptismal font in the church, made around 1250 and probably the oldest baptismal font on Rügen. The qualification is important: it is considered probably the oldest, not definitively the oldest baptismal font on the island. For visitors interested in historic church art, it is a particularly early example among the features mentioned here.

The church also contains a carved St. Margaret’s altar dating from the mid-15th century. The Neo-Gothic organ comes from the Nerlich workshop in Stralsund. Together with the age of the village, these features offer a historical perspective to consider alongside the heath and hiking trail when choosing a destination.

Which side of Patzig suits your trip?

If you would like to spend most of your time hiking, the Bodden Panorama Trail offers a specific option with its sections. If the history of a place matters more to you, St. Margaret’s Village Church and its features take centre stage. The Patziger Heide and its view, which depends on good weather, add a connection with the landscape to these two interests.
