Gustow lies on the Strelasund, the strait that separates Rügen from mainland Germany. The municipality includes the island of Gustower Werder and the Drigge peninsula, which extends into the Strelasund. The Rügen Causeway is approximately six kilometers from Gustow.

Bronze Age archaeology is also documented in Gustow: at the Gustow 38 site, the plowed-up grave of a woman was discovered. In addition, six Bronze Age objects were found during field surveys in 2014.
