Putgarten is the northernmost municipality in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The town is located in the northeastern part of the Wittow peninsula on Rügen, between the Tromper Wiek to the east and the open Baltic Sea to the north.
Landscape
The municipal area is gently hilly and largely open. It is predominantly used for agriculture; coastal forest characterizes the landscape in the north and east.
The highest elevations are located near Cape Arkona and rise to just over 40 meters. There, the steep coast drops sharply to the Baltic Sea.
Many tourists visit Putgarten’s attractions and primarily arrive by bus and private car. Putgarten and the visitor sites are closed to private cars and buses; local residents are exempt.
