The village lies by the lakes Ułówki and Łaśmiady; the orange-marked “Wokół Łaśmiad” trail also passes through the village. Understanding the Village and Its Waters
Ułówki is the western arm of Lake Łaśmiady and lies near the villages of Gorło and Laśmiady. Laśmiady itself lies by both named bodies of water; when getting your bearings, the village, the lake and its western arm are therefore connected, though they are not the same geographical feature. Lake Łaśmiady has an area of 264.82 hectares and a maximum depth of 25.5 metres. The area indicates its size, while the depth refers to the maximum value; it does not describe every part of the lake equally. Area and depth are therefore two different measures that together give a clearer picture of the body of water. When considering the location, you can distinguish Ułówki as the western arm from Lake Łaśmiady as a whole. Both names are also relevant for planning your trip, since the village lies by Ułówki and Łaśmiady.
Two Trails, Different Routes
The two trails differ in length and in how they relate to the village. The orange-marked “Wokół Łaśmiad” trail passes through Laśmiady and is about 31.7 kilometres long. The Szlak Łaźna Struga is 57 kilometres long and runs along the eastern shore of Lake Łaśmiady; it is in the vicinity of the destination. The route through the village is therefore shorter than the longer waterside route, by approximately 25 kilometres. Two questions can help you make an initial choice: How long is the route, and does it pass through Laśmiady or follow the shore? Historical Place Names
The place names also offer a glimpse into the area’s history. Lesemund and Lesemuntzki are cited as historical forms of Laśmiady for 1540; the forms Lasmiaden and Lasameth are cited for 1664. Laszmiaden was used until 1938, and Laschmieden from 1938 to 1945. Laśmiady was used after 1945. The names can thus be arranged chronologically: when looking at an older spelling, you can consider it alongside the corresponding year rather than treating the names as interchangeable terms for the same period. For travellers interested in local history, this sequence of names offers a concise point of reference. It connects the place name with earlier spellings and the periods specified for each.
