Getting Around

History and Culture

The German minority association “Mazury” was founded in Ełk in 1991 and has been active there since 1991. It represents members from the city and the surrounding region.

The Railway Museum in Ełk displays railway memorabilia, including postcards, historic ticket punches, tickets, East Prussian railway station signs, uniforms, railway lamps, communications equipment, and typewriters.

The island in Lake Ełk is home to the ruins of a Teutonic Order castle. A wooden castle was built there between 1398 and 1406.

A preserved narrow-gauge locomotive has been located in Ełk since 1993.
