Myki on Lake Wadąg

Myki lies on the southern shore of Lake Wadąg and on the Wadąg River, in the Olsztyńskie Lakeland. The village’s history includes two founding moments. Myki was founded in 1399 under the name Miken. The current name of the village derives from the Old Prussian first name Micke, which corresponds to the Christian name Nicholas. On 5 February 1517, Nicolaus Copernicus founded Myki again. Miken and Micke have different roles: Miken is the historical name of the village, while Micke is the first name from which Myki derives. Its refounding by Copernicus provides a distinct historical reference point. The founding, the origin of the name and the later refounding shed light on different aspects of the village’s history.

A neo-Gothic Warmian chapel stands at the village entrance. Its location and regional character make it a tangible part of the village landscape.
