Barth
The town lies between Rostock and Stralsund, a few kilometres north of the federal highway 105 connecting the two cities. As the eastern gateway to the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula, Barth has also benefited from the area’s tourism development since it began. In 1911, a narrow-gauge railway line to Prerow on the Darß was built.
The successful results of the extensive urban renewal are already evident in the market square, pedestrian zone and harbour area, with its restored warehouse, harbourmaster’s office and floating stage. The harbour area in particular has become a visitor attraction in its own right. The Bible Centre, housed in a former chapel, displays the famous Low German Barth Bible of 1588, along with a wealth of other information about biblical history.
The town of Barth makes the most of its location at the entrance to the large holiday region of the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula, while also offering its own maritime holidays and showcasing its historic character. Just a few kilometres east of Barth begins the so-called “crane region”. On the mainland between Barth and Stralsund, as well as in the shallow Bodden waters between the mainland, Zingst and the island of Rügen, lies Germany’s largest crane roosting area. Twice a year, up to 50,000 of these birds of happiness stop here on their way to and from their wintering grounds, making them a sought-after sight for wildlife enthusiasts.
