Ribnitz-Damgarten

The twin town of Ribnitz-Damgarten, with a population of about 16,000, lies roughly halfway between the Hanseatic cities of Rostock and Stralsund.
Thanks to its tradition, Ribnitz-Damgarten has earned the name “Amber City.” The first amber workshop, Fischland-Schmuck, was established in 1932. After 1945, its successor company, Ostseeschmuck, developed into one of the town’s largest employers. In this context, the local history museum in Ribnitz was gradually converted into an amber museum, which continues to operate today in a former monastery under the name German Amber Museum. Among its newest exhibits is a replica of part of the lost Amber Room. Amber shapes everyday life in the town in many ways,
Ribnitz-Damgarten’s tourist information office, the first stop for holidaymakers, is located in the Amber House on Ribnitz Market Square. Ribnitz-Damgarten offers a maritime atmosphere along the well-developed promenade on the Bodden. Both parts of the town have popular, modern leisure marinas. The town is considered the gateway to the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula and is a starting point for excursions into the surrounding area and to the Baltic Sea, by bike along newly built cycle routes or by boat. Numerous accommodation options, including hotels, guesthouses and campsites, provide places to stay in Ribnitz-Damgarten and the surrounding area.
