Born
The state-recognized resort town of Born encompasses a large part of the Darß, including the Westdarß and its northern tip, Darßer Ort. Born itself lies directly south of the Darß Forest, on the shores of the Saaler Bodden and Bodstedter Bodden lagoons. The town is characterised by picturesque, brightly painted fishermen’s, sailors’ and captains’ houses. Considered one of the most beautiful places in the region, it stretches for almost four kilometres. Access points to the water have been created at regular intervals, often with small boat jetties.
The Darß Forest and the Darß West Beach, with its wild and romantic wind-bent trees, are also part of Born. The Darß Forest is part of the Vorpommern Lagoon Area National Park and is one of the best-preserved forest areas in northern Germany, with little or no active forest management. On the Westdarß, coastal erosion means that the Baltic Sea is gradually “claiming” more and more of the forest, while just a few kilometres to the north, at Darßer Ort, the land is growing: Darßer Ort is extending northwards.
There are two campsites within the municipality, west of the Baltic seaside resort of Prerow. Holiday apartments and houses are the main types of visitor accommodation in the resort. In the district of Ibenhorst, a youth hostel welcomes guests.
