Bergen
Bergen lies almost exactly in the middle of Rügen Island. The town’s name is apt: Bergen lies on Rugard Hill, which, at 91 metres, is notably high for this otherwise flat region. Bergen’s town centre offers a varied choice of shops and places to enjoy its diverse dining scene. A distinctive atmosphere blending historic and urban character has developed, especially around the market and neighbouring St. Mary’s Church, with numerous little corners inviting visitors to linger. The basilica of St. Mary’s Church is considered the oldest surviving brick building in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
With its urban character, proximity to seaside resorts such as Binz, Sellin and Göhren , and its many shopping opportunities, the town is a popular stop for holidaymakers. The summer toboggan run and treetop adventure course on Rugard are popular attractions for all ages. On the outskirts of Bergen, beside the B96 highway, Nonnensee—drained in the 19th century—has filled up again naturally. Today, it is a haven for waterbirds.
