Seaside Resort of Binz

The seaside resort of Binz is located in the east of the island of Rügen, on Prorer Wiek Bay. Since the late 19th century, Binz has developed into one of the most important seaside resorts on the Baltic Sea. Its many reconstructed villas, built in the resort architecture style, are presented in remarkable variety. No other German Baltic Sea resort has preserved its town centre so well in its original form and scale. At the heart of the 3.5-kilometre-long beachfront promenade, beside a beach stretching for more than five kilometres, are the Kurhaus and the pier, where boats also dock for excursions.
The seaside resort of Binz also includes the holiday complex in Prora, planned as a KdF resort and known as the “Colossus of Prora”. It lies north of Binz on the “Schmale Heide” spit. The buildings, which stood empty for a long time, have now been almost completely renovated and have become a special attraction.
Immediately southeast of Binz lies the Granitz, a small, wooded ridge rising to more than 100 metres. At its summit, Granitz Hunting Lodge offers impressive panoramic views of the island and its coastal waters from its 38-metre-high observation tower.
