Sassnitz
Sassnitz is located in the northeast of the island of Rügen on the Jasmund Peninsula, south of Jasmund National Park, Germany’s smallest national park. Sassnitz has made a name for itself nationally and internationally, particularly for its chalk cliffs and its ferry port, which in 1897 established the “Royal Route” to Trelleborg in Sweden. Sassnitz has been known as a seaside resort since the end of the 19th century. Its sheltered southern location and numerous buildings in the resort architecture style create a Mediterranean atmosphere, especially around the harbor, with its old ferry port and fishing port. To protect them, Europe’s longest outer breakwater was built, measuring 1,450 meters.
The ferry port has since been relocated to the district of Mukran. Ferries depart from here for Trelleborg (Sweden) and Rønne (the island of Bornholm, Denmark).
Sassnitz’s town harbor is the starting point for trips by passenger ship or fishing boat to Königsstuhl, the impressive 116-meter-high chalk cliff north of Sassnitz.
