Excursion Ideas on Fischland-Darß-Zingst
The Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula is an increasingly popular gem on the Baltic coast. In a very small area, visitors can experience unique natural features and developments, from coastal dynamics and unspoiled forests to a paradise for cranes.
German Amber Museum
The largest amber collection in Germany can be viewed at the German Amber Museum in Ribnitz-Damgarten. The museum is housed in a former monastery in the centre of Ribnitz and offers an overview of the diversity of amber and the history of its processing across 1,000 square metres of exhibition space. A lizard trapped in amber is probably unique anywhere in the world.
Klockenhagen Open-Air Museum
The open-air museum, located on the route from Ribnitz-Damgarten towards Fischland, offers a snapshot of rural life from the 17th to the early 20th century. Period buildings house traditional farm animals, while a collection of historic agricultural machinery is complemented by exhibits on horticulture. The grounds are home to the last surviving post mill in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Ahrenshoop Art Museum
This privately run museum continues the tradition of the artists’ colony at the Baltic seaside resort. The founding motto of the Kunstkaten in 1909—“Ahrenshoop cottages – a home for local art and crafts”—remains relevant today. The buildings, with their distinctive architecture, display more than 500 paintings, graphic works and sculptures by artists who have worked, and continue to work, in the region.
Darßer Arche
The Darßer Arche in the resort town of Wieck on the Darß is a striking combination of the old village school and a modern extension. It brings together the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft Information Centre, tourist information office, library and creative workshop under one roof. Environmental education programmes and nature-experience events round out the offering.
