Germany’s second-largest and arguably most beautiful island stretches almost 40 kilometres and boasts one of the longest uninterrupted sandy beaches on the entire Baltic Sea. Its counterpart is the varied natural landscape of the island’s tranquil Achterland (hinterland), whose eastern part is crossed by the border with Poland. Since the end of 2007, however, the Schengen Agreement has allowed unrestricted movement between the two countries.
