Klemensker on Bornholm: Trails, Church and Cheese
Accommodation in Klemensker
If you are looking for hotels on Bornholm, you can choose a location in Klemensker based on specific travel interests: the Klemenskerstien circles the village, the large St. Clemens Church stands in the centre, and Præstemosen offers a shelter and a wooden bridge by the lake. Art in the church and cheese-making at Bornholms Andelsmejeri add to the picture. When choosing where to stay, you can weigh up whether a circular walk, the village centre, time by the water and local specialities fit your plans. Bornholm also has plenty more to offer in terms of nature, culture and food.
Circular Walk and Cycling Route in Klemensker
The Klemenskerstien circles all the way around Klemensker. The route is not marked, so bear this in mind when finding your way. For cyclists, Regional Route 23 offers another option: it reaches Klemensker from Nyker. This gives you a choice of different ways to get around—a circuit around the village that is not marked, and a cycling route from the direction of Nyker.
Church and Art in the Village Centre
The large St. Clemens Church stands in the centre of Klemensker and is visible from far away. In Sct. Clemens Kirke, Paul Høm gave the congregation a mosaic above the chancel arch. It depicts a pierced lamb with a victory banner and chalice. Høm also chose the colours of the church interior and decorated the 1882 pulpit with figures of the four Evangelists and vine tendrils in the panels. The church thus combines a prominent location in the village with specific artistic details that give the building its distinctive character.
Præstemosen: A Break by the Water
Præstemosen is in Klemensker, near Klemens Church. By the lake there is a shelter and a wooden bridge that extends out over the water. The small bridge provides access close to the water, while the area around the shelter offers a place to take a break outdoors.
Cheese and Bornholm Specialities
Bornholms Andelsmejeri invites visitors to sample Bornholm specialities. At the dairy, blue cheeses are still turned by hand. The cheese experience therefore has two aspects: the opportunity to sample the products and a specific, artisanal production practice. If you plan to include a tasting, check visiting times in advance.
Bornholm: More Nature and Culture
Beyond Klemensker, Bornholm offers a range of other ways to plan your trip. At the NaturBornholm experience centre, you can see dinosaurs, live crocodiles, an aquarium and a bison exhibition; the exhibitions may change over time. Bornholms Middelaldercenter is a 15-hectare open-air museum that brings Bornholm in the 14th century to life in an engaging, interactive way. The island’s attractions range from nature and wildlife exhibitions to historical interpretation.
Bornholm’s scenic destinations include Ekkodalen in Almindingen, the island’s largest rift valley. From the cliffs above Opal Lake, you can look out over the surrounding area, the Baltic Sea and the ruins of Hammershus Castle. These viewpoints offer a different experience from the paths and village centre of Klemensker, and are a reason to include nature experiences on Bornholm in your travel plans.
Bornholm’s food culture also has a long history: the island’s first smokehouse opened in Gudhjem in 1866, and herring has been smoked there ever since. Hasle Smokehouse is the last smokehouse on Bornholm where fish is smoked in the traditional way, using open chimneys and alder wood. The two locations thus represent different chapters in Bornholm’s smoking tradition.
