Verchen on Lake Kummerow

Verchen lies on the northeastern shore of Lake Kummerow, at the outlet of the Peene River. The history of the town is also a subject in its own right for travellers. St. Mary's Monastery Church was built in 1269 as an Early Gothic hall church. Also in 1269, Benedictine nuns moved to Verchen and expanded the local church into a monastery. Three stained-glass windows have been preserved in the church; they are among the oldest stained glass in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. There is also a triumphal cross dating from around 1440.
