Kentzlin: Manor House and Garden

In Kentzlin, Alt Kentzlin Manor House, its garden and a cheese tasting available on request provide specific starting points for planning a trip. The town’s history dates back to 1300, when Kentzlin was first mentioned in a document, under the name Cancelyn. The architecture and garden tell different stories about the town: one is defined by half-timbering and room layout, the other by ancient trees, an orchard and a motte.

Alt Kentzlin Manor House: Half-Timbering and Room Layout

Alt Kentzlin Manor House is a single-storey half-timbered house with a half-hipped roof. It stands on a fieldstone base, above which a largely regular oak post-and-beam framework defines the structure. The posts are just under 20 centimetres thick, and the spaces between them are filled with clinker bricks. The building’s components are easy to distinguish: fieldstone forms the base, oak provides the load-bearing framework, and clinker bricks fill the spaces between the timbers. The regular arrangement of the half-timbering and the substantial posts define the house’s appearance.

The room layout is also distinctive inside. The floor plan comprises a large hall, a central longitudinal corridor and a garden room extending from the entrance area. The rooms at the front are connected by an enfilade. This means a sequence of rooms whose doorways lie along a single axis. Together with its clear floor plan, the manor house displays the widespread room layout of a manor house in an especially clear and unaltered form.

Garden, Ancient Trees and a Motte

Four oaks between 200 and 500 years old stand in the garden behind the manor house. The garden also includes an orchard with old trees. A motte, an ancient defensive mound, adds a historic feature to the garden. The manor house thus brings together architectural details and a garden that includes both individual ancient oaks and an orchard.

Another historical site lies in the wider area around the destination: about 250 metres west of Neu-Kentzlin are the well-preserved remains of a Slavic ring fort. The site measures approximately 100 by 90 metres and is now covered with trees. Its approximate dimensions give an idea of its extent, while the tree cover describes its present-day appearance.
