Demen offers three distinct starting points for planning a trip: the church, the lake on the edge of the village and the “Around Crivitz” route, whose main stretch runs through the town. Church, townscape and history
The church in Demen is an Early Gothic brick building. Together with the rectory, it shapes the townscape; old small-leaved lime trees stand on the church grounds. The building itself and the trees on its grounds are therefore among the town’s defining features.
The church contains a well-preserved Gothic carved wooden altarpiece. It depicts Saint Mary and the body of Christ. The Early Gothic architecture and a carved religious scene thus represent different aspects of the church: the building itself and the event depicted.
The bells also provide specific historical details. The larger bell has a diameter of 75 centimetres and was cast in Lübeck in 1737. The smaller one measures 50 centimetres in diameter and was recast in 1852; no location is specified. Together with the church and altar, these details add to the picture of the town’s architectural and decorative history.
Lake, Warnow and cycling route
Demener See lies right on the edge of the village and has a bathing beach. Swimming conditions and facilities may vary by season. If you plan to stop for a swim, check the current situation before your visit.
The Warnow flows through the municipality of Demen and passes to the southwest of the town in the nearby area. The surroundings are considered peaceful and close to nature. Canoe trips can be planned on the Warnow; there are rental stations along the river at Gut Vorbeck, Weitendorf or Sternberger Burg. As availability and river conditions can change, take both into account when planning and check the current situation before setting off.
For horse enthusiasts, a picturesque riding stable in the Warnow lowlands is available nearby. The option of planning a canoe trip, the bathing beach by the lake and this horse-related offering provide different ways to spend time in the area.
The “Around Crivitz” route is an approximately 89-kilometre cycling and hiking trail. Its main stretch runs through Demen and Kölpin. The route thus combines two designated activities and passes through Demen; check the route information before setting off if you plan to include it in your itinerary.
Demen and the wider Ludwigslust-Parchim travel destination
Within the wider Ludwigslust-Parchim travel destination, Ludwigslust Palace offers its own focus on cultural history. It was the former residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg and, together with its park and the town, forms an ensemble known as the “Little Versailles of the North.” The palace is also the centrepiece of an almost entirely preserved late Baroque town complex, with a former court church and an English-style landscaped park. The palace presents art and courtly domestic culture from the 18th and early 19th centuries. Different architectural styles are therefore in view: the Early Gothic brick building of the Demen church and the late Baroque palace and town complex in the wider Ludwigslust-Parchim travel destination.
