Lakes around Rękusy
Lake Mołdzie is 2.5 km from Rękusy. The distances to Lakes Lepaki (Lepaki Małe), Guzki, Sunowo (Sanowo), Szarek and Chrzanowo are given as 3 km, 3.5 km, 3.8 km, 3.8 km and 4.2 km, respectively. Mołdzie is therefore the nearest lake mentioned; among these destinations, Chrzanowo is the farthest away. Local history across two periods
In 1494, Rękusy received a settlement charter under Magdeburg law. Commander Rudolf von Tippelskirchen granted Marcin Rękus (Matz Ranckus) 7.5 łans of land. Another testament to the village’s history is the former school building, dating from 1926. The brick building has been renovated and altered several times. Thus, the documented settlement history of the 15th century and the history of a building formerly used as a school stand side by side. Birdwatching and a hiking trail
A report published on October 7, 2024, describes a one-off ornithological outing on October 6 as part of the European Bird Days. The Centrum Edukacji Ekologicznej and the Klub Miłośników Ptaków organized the trip. Its route ran from Ełk via Rękusy, Ruska Wieś, Rogale, Lake Sawinda and Lake Sunowo, and back to Ełk. The outing lasted 3.5 hours and was attended by twelve people. It was a one-time event, not a regularly offered excursion.
The “Zabytkowe cmentarze” hiking trail also passes through Rękusy. Its described route runs from Stare Juchy via Liski, Grabnik, Rogale, Guzki, Mołdzie, Ruska Wieś, Góra Pilchowa and Rękusy to Bartosze, and continues to Ełk. Historical memorial sites in the wider area
Góra Pilchowa and Bartosze are in the wider region; the memorial sites there are not attractions within Rękusy. At Góra Pilchowa, graves of German and Russian soldiers who died during the hostilities of 1914–1918 lie hidden among the trees. Bartosze is home to a cemetery from the Second World War. The remains of more than 24,000 soldiers and civilians lie there; it is the largest cemetery of its kind in Warmia and Masuria. Together with the hiking trail, which includes both places in its route, these sites offer a historical perspective on different periods of the region’s history.
