Nylars is a small village in the south of Bornholm, about 8 km from Rønne. Built around 1160, Nylars Round Church is one of Bornholm’s four whitewashed round churches; Visit Bornholm highlights these churches as a characteristic attraction of the island and lists Nylars Round Church as the best-preserved of the four.

Culture

The church served both religious and defensive purposes. Its upper levels were used to observe the surrounding area and served as a refuge during times of unrest.

Inside are Romanesque frescoes from the 12th century, which are among the best-preserved on Bornholm.

Landscape

A 37-hectare protected area was established around the church and east of Nylars in 1987. Antoinette and Bornholm are located in the vicinity of Nylars. In the wider regional surroundings of Nylars are Sorte Gryde, Hammershus, Hullehavn, Solomons Kapel, Sankt Povls Kirke and Rutskirke.

Routes

Nylars is located on the road between Rønne and Aakirkeby. A cycle path now runs along the former route of the Rønne–Nexø railway line, from Robbedale to east of Lobbæk.
