Churches and half-timbering in Beggerow and Glendelin
Construction of the church in Beggerow began around 1450. Its nave consists of half-timbering enclosed in masonry; old half-timbering has also been preserved in the massive foundations. The church is probably the oldest in the parish. A bell dating from the Reformation era still rings today. Its more recent building history also has several milestones: work began in 2005 with renovation of the roof. In 2013, the church reopened following extensive renovation and changes to the interior. It is stated to be open during the summer months; check current access arrangements before visiting.
In Glendelin, a small chapel stands near the village pond. It was preceded by a half-timbered building, but no half-timbering elements remain in the chapel’s walls. Unlike the church in Beggerow, where half-timbering survives in the nave and foundations, Glendelin’s connection to half-timbering lies in the building that preceded the chapel. The two sites therefore offer contrasting traces of the past: preserved half-timbering in the church and a former half-timbered building on the chapel’s site.
Repair together and get involved
The Landkombinat’s open workshops regularly host a repair café. Visitors can bring broken items and work on them together with the repair team, using their knowledge, tools and materials. As the date may change, check the latest schedule before visiting. The Landkombinat also organizes activity days for children’s and youth groups focused on the workshop, the cider press and the orchard meadow. Community events and conservation work in the nature reserve are among the other organized activities. These formats differ: the repair café lets people work together on items they bring in, while the activity days are specifically intended for children’s and youth groups.
The Augraben and the nature reserve
The Augraben stream flows through the municipality of Beggerow. The nearby Wallberge und Kreidescholle nature reserve features species-rich dry grassland and nutrient-poor grassland on hilltops and slopes within a small area. It also includes smaller bodies of water and boggy hollows in wetter Osgräben. The variety of habitats there comes from the contrast between the drier hilltops and slopes and the wetter hollows. As a point of reference, Federal Highway 194 runs west of the municipality of Beggerow.
The Mecklenburg Lake District as another travel setting
