Cruising Guide Sweden 2
The authors Gerti and Harm Claußen are renowned experts on Sweden. Gerti Claußen had to take on the seventh, completely revised edition of this book alone after her husband’s death. She covered almost 6,000 kilometres in her VW camper van to do so. Compared with the previous editions, several new natural harbours have been added, all of which she reached by land, sometimes along adventurous routes. She also took an important lesson to heart: harbours that are not illustrated are rarely visited. Leisure sailors also prefer descriptions that are as complete as possible, covering the surroundings and nearby attractions. All of this has gone into this book, which is indispensable for anyone wishing to explore this varied water-sports region between Sweden’s southwestern tip near Falsterbo and the northern end of the Stockholm archipelago.

Eight regions, each with its own character
The guide begins west of the port town of Trelleborg in the historic fishing village of Falsterbo, passes Sweden’s southernmost point at Smygehuk, and reaches the broad Hanö Bay at Simrishamn. The bay ends to the north at the naval port of Karlskrona and the skerries offshore. The next two sections cover the mainland coast of the Kalmar Strait, the narrow sea passage between Sweden and the island of Öland, as well as the long island itself, with its many small harbours on the east and west coasts.
A separate section is devoted to Sweden’s largest island, Gotland, and the small islands offshore, which lie more than 50 nautical miles from the Swedish coast.
The section between the Kalmar Strait and Arkösund also covers the entrance to the Göta Canal and ends at the approach to Norrköping. This is also where the vast Stockholm archipelago begins, covered in two sections.
The book naturally also contains valuable and important general advice for a stay in Sweden, especially the key legal regulations governing recreational boating.
