History along routes through Koszalin
The Staromiejska Tourist Route passes 28 historic buildings. Information boards and metal markers in the ground show the way. If you would rather focus on individual places and their stories, you can also take the “Poznaj Historię” route: special boards with QR codes share stories about nine places along the city's tourist route. The two options have different focuses—one highlights historic buildings along a route, while the other tells the stories of selected places.
The defensive walls formed a 1,600-metre ring with 46 defensive passages and three gates as part of the medieval city fortifications. Another landmark in the city's history is the Castle Church (“Kościół zamkowy”). The building dates from the 13th or 14th century, is now an Orthodox church and is listed in the register of monuments. The Gothic town house “Domek Kata,” dating from the 15th century, has been home to Teatr Propozycji “Dialog” since 1964. The city's historic character therefore encompasses both older buildings and a venue associated with theatre.
Crafts, nature and exercise
In northern Koszalin, Zagroda Jamneńska showcases artefacts associated with Jamneńska culture. It also offers year-round workshops in ceramics, embroidery, small-scale weaving, polychrome wood decoration and block printing on fabric. This makes it an interesting visit for travellers who want to explore traditional crafts as well as historic buildings.
The area around Góra Chełmska offers a different way to spend time outdoors. The massif's highest peak is Krzyżanka, at 136.2 metres above sea level. The blue “Porwanego Księcia” hiking trail is 12 kilometres long and runs from Koszalin via Sianów to Góra Chełmska and through its forest areas. Its length and route make it easy to plan this hike as a standalone outing. Koszalin's natural areas also include the protected Rezerwat Jezioro Lubiatowskie im. profesora Wojciecha Górskiego nature reserve and the protected “Wąwozy Grabowe” Zespół Przyrodniczo-Krajobrazowy landscape and nature complex.
Water activities and other experiences
Wodna Dolina has a city beach with a bathing area supervised in summer and a swimming equipment rental service. Also located there is Wakepark Koszalin, with a two-tower cable lift, equipment rental and instructor supervision. For a different way to enjoy the water, Park Wodny has six pools, including two outdoor pools, and the 176-metre “Anakonda” waterslide. These options are quite distinct: you can choose between a summer bathing area, wakeboarding, or pools with a waterslide.
Koszalińska Kolej Wąskotorowa offers its own way to experience the area: its historic rolling stock travels along the Dzierżęcinka River and Lake Lubiatowskie. Culture enthusiasts can attend open Saturday lectures at the Astronomical Observatory, as well as talks in regular themed series. The Ignacy Jan Paderewski Amphitheatre hosts the “Kabareton” cabaret festival every year. There is also a free bicycle parking area with 15 bicycle racks in front of the town hall.
