Eastern Jutland, Denmark

The richly varied coastline of Southern Jutland continues northward in much the same way. Between Juelsminde south of Horsens and Ebeltoft on the Djursland peninsula, bays and fjords follow one another in succession. The coastal stretch between the trading town of Horsens and Denmark’s second-largest city, Aarhus, also offers a variety of landscapes. Opposite it, halfway between the Jutland mainland and the island of Funen , lies the small holiday island of Samsø. Aarhus is unquestionably the region’s hub. It is also the gateway to the Djursland peninsula. Recently designated a national park, Djursland—with its ferry port of Grenaa and the holiday town of Ebeltoft—is regarded as Denmark in miniature, since almost every type of landscape can be found here. To the north, between Ebeltoft on Djursland and the mouth of Randers Fjord, the coast is more uniform and less varied, with numerous bathing beaches. The hinterland is also varied, especially in the triangle between Aarhus, Skanderborg and Silkeborg. Hills, forests and plenty of water characterize this area, which makes for a holiday destination in its own right, not far from Denmark’s Baltic coast. Denmark’s longest river, the 173-kilometre-long Gudenå, also flows and empties into the sea here.

Eastern Jutland’s highly developed tourist infrastructure is an excellent complement to its unique natural assets. A wide range of holiday accommodation fits into this combination of nature and attractions; as is customary here and throughout Denmark, holiday homes and apartments predominate. Numerous campsites line the long, indented coastline. The coastal towns of Horsens and Aarhus, as well as nearby Randers , offer hotels of various standards. Golf courses are plentiful throughout the coastal area. The region as a whole is one of the most popular and quintessential holiday destinations in Denmark.
