Rügen

Rügen is Germany’s largest island—and the picture it offers visitors is just as varied, depending on whether they are looking for a holiday in elegant seaside resorts such as Binz and Sellin, genuine natural treasures such as Jasmund National Park with its high coastal cliffs and famous chalk cliffs, or a taste of harbor life in Sassnitz as a starting point for ferries to Scandinavia and the Baltic states.

In his guidebook, author Sven Talaron explores the different “regions” of Rügen. In addition to the seaside resorts on the eastern side, he introduces readers to nature-rich regions such as Wittow in the north and the Granitz and Mönchgut in the south (including a hiking guide). One chapter also covers the “wild west” of the island. The island’s capital, Bergen, is also mentioned, as is the town of the same name on the Bodden, built in the classical style under Prince Malte of Putbus.

The Hanseatic city of Stralsund, whose old town, together with that of the Hanseatic city of Wismar, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, receives special attention and is well worth a full-day trip. So is Rügen’s smaller sister island, Hiddensee, which lies within Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park.

This guidebook from Michael Müller Verlag follows the publisher’s familiar format and, with its maps, town plans, and customary special chapters on local life, customs, and historical excursions, provides a solid foundation for your next holiday on Rügen—not just in the summer season!
